NORML is endorsing Tim Canova, democratic primary challenger to US House member and DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Here’s what Tim has to say about special interests:

MOLINEAUXMMJINVERTED

Betcha ………..Certain industries have a special interest in keeping marijuana illegal – for example, the alcohol and pharmaceutical industries, both of which view recreational and medicinal use of marijuana as a competitive threat; and the private prison industry, which profits from warehousing people in jails, including for marijuana possession. Not surprisingly, having taken in lots of campaign donations from the alcohol, pharmaceutical, and private prison industries and their political action committees (PACs), Debbie Wasserman Schultz opposes medical marijuana and supports privatized prisons and mass incarceration. Unlike my opponent, I do not take any contributions from these special interests, or from any corporate interests at all.”
….Legalization has major benefits for society as a whole (decreased opioid deaths, the roads will get safer, probably less violence in society as a whole), but it will put huge dents into the pockets of many special interest groups like the pharmaceutical industry, private prison industry, alcohol industry etc.90% of the public (based on recent polls) believe we should have access to medical cannabis and yet dinosaurs like Dianne Feinstein, Chuck Grassley along with most elected leaders continue to fight to keep this from happening. Remember how out of touch with science, reason and compassion they are when you vote. They are doing the bidding of big $ and do not deserve to represent us.
it’s illegal because it works.

Pharmaceutical companies stand to lose everything…..Health concerns regarding cannabis/marijuana tend to come from a self-fueling group of discredited scientists funded by the pharmaceutical, prison, tobacco, and alcohol industries. They push non-peer-reviewed papers, fraught with conjecture and confounding variables, while relying upon reports issued by others in their own group to further support their own grossly misleading research and clearly biased agendas.
Here’s the real science:

Study: Cannabis/Marijuana Use Not Predictive Of Lower IQ, Poorer Educational Performance
~~~~~~~~~~
“… to test the relationships between cumulative cannabis use and IQ at the age of 15 and educational performance at the age of 16. After full adjustment, those who had used cannabis more than 50 times did not differ from never-users on either IQ or educational performance. Adjusting for group differences in cigarette smoking dramatically attenuated the associations between cannabis use and both outcomes, and further analyses demonstrated robust associations between cigarette use and educational outcomes, even with cannabis users excluded. These findings suggest that adolescent cannabis use is not associated with IQ or educational performance once adjustment is made for potential confounds, in particular adolescent cigarette use.”
Source: C Mokrysz, et al. Clinical Psychopharmacology Unit, University College London. Published January 6, 2016 in Journal of Psychopharmacology.Daily Cannabis/Marijuana Use Is Not Associated with Brain Morphometric Measures in Adolescents or Adults
~~~~~~~~~~
“No statistically significant differences were found between daily users and nonusers on volume or shape in the regions of interest. Effect sizes suggest that the failure to find differences was not due to a lack of statistical power, but rather was due to the lack of even a modest effect. In sum, the results indicate that, when carefully controlling for alcohol use, gender, age, and other variables, there is no association between marijuana use and standard volumetric or shape measurements of subcortical structures.”

After Medical Marijuana Legalized, Medicare Prescriptions Drop For Many Drugs

~~~According to the FUDS….Marijuana is illegal because it’s dangerous? BS! Here’s more reasons why weed is illegal:
~~~~~~~
John Erlichman in an interview with journalist Dan Baum:
~~~~~~~~~~
“You want to know what this was really all about? The Nixon campaign in 1968 and the Nixon White House after that had two enemies; the anti-war left and the Black people. Understand what I’m saying?
Marijuana-Spirituality2
We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or Black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and the Blacks with heroin and then criminalizing both heavily we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders. Raid their homes. Break up their meetings and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”
“A recent study suggested that smoking marijuana was less harmful to lungs than tobacco cigarettes.”
*************************
1) Tobacco is cancer causing largely because it delivers specific carcinogens such as NNK and NNAL that are not present in cannabis. Not all “tar” is created equal, and tobacco has some of the most carcinogenic types of tar known to science, whereas cannabis does not.
************************************
2) Cannabis (marijuana) use is associated with a DECREASE in several types of cancer… potentially even providing a protective effect against tobacco and alcohol related cancer development.
******************************************
Donald Tashkin, a UCLA researcher whose work is funded by NIDA, did a case-control study comparing 1,200 patients with lung, head and neck cancers to a matched group with no cancer. Even the heaviest marijuana smokers had no increased risk of cancer, and had somewhat lower cancer risk than non-smokers (tobacco smokers had a 20-fold increased lung cancer risk). Tashkin D. Marijuana Use and Lung Cancer: Results of a Case-Control Study. American Thoracic Society International Conference. May 23, 2006.
************************************************Researchers at the Kaiser-Permanente HMO, funded by NIDA, followed 65,000 patients for nearly a decade, comparing cancer rates among non-smokers, tobacco smokers, and marijuana smokers. Tobacco smokers had massively higher rates of lung cancer and other cancers. Marijuana smokers who didn’t also use tobacco had no increase in risk of tobacco-related cancers or of cancer risk overall. In fact their rates of lung and most other cancers were slightly lower than non-smokers. Sidney, S. et al. Marijuana Use and Cancer Incidence (California, United States). Cancer Causes and Control. Vol. 8. Sept. 1997, p. 722-728.
*********************************************************
“Components of cannabis smoke minimize some carcinogenic pathways whereas tobacco smoke enhances some. Both types of smoke contain carcinogens and particulate matter that promotes inflammatory immune responses that may enhance the carcinogenic effects of the smoke. However, cannabis typically down-regulates immunologically-generated free radical production by promoting a Th2 immune cytokine profile. Furthermore, THC inhibits the enzyme necessary to activate some of the carcinogens found in smoke. In contrast, tobacco smoke increases the likelihood of carcinogenesis by overcoming normal cellular checkpoint protective mechanisms through the activity of respiratory epithelial cell nicotine receptors. Cannabinoids receptors have not been reported in respiratory epithelial cells (in skin they prevent cancer), and hence the DNA damage checkpoint mechanism should remain intact after prolonged cannabis exposure. Furthermore, nicotine promotes tumor angiogenesis whereas cannabis inhibits it.”
So there we have it: Tobacco Causes Cancer and Cannabis Prevents Cancer – even when smoked!
🙂 *(*@*@*)**** 🙂
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So opioid use decreases by 2/3rds in medical marijuana states? imagine dat huh! ? 🙂
************
Little wonder big pharma and the Arrest-and-Punishment Industry leaders and politicians are against legalization.
********************
Lots more funding and donations from big pharma are more important that the well-being of the non-connected citizens.

  1. I met someone, recently, who was prosecuted for possession of €25 worth of marijuana. So far, because of court postponements, it has cost her €600 in legal fees and the case has yet to be heard. WTF?

  2. There is a strong possibility that had my late son-in-law been able to have legal access to cannabis in time, he would have been alive today. It isn’t even as if the benefits are unproven – but they are demonised by the commercial interests mentioned. An alarmingly large number of statistics, in fact, are manipulated and distorted in the interests of Big Business, the leaders of which belong in the privatised prisons instead of users.

  3. Marijuana should not be legislated. Grapes aren’t legislated because they’re made into wine. Corn and rye aren’t legislated because they’re distilled into whiskey. Marijuana should just grow. xoM 😉
